KoMets finish third in state tournament

Kasson-Mantorville's big season ended Nov. 9 with a 3-0 victory over Concordia Academy, Roseville, in the third-place match at the state Class 2A high school volleyball tournament.

The top-seeded KoMets, 2017 state consolation champions, defeated No. 2 Concordia 3-0 to finish 31-3. They defeated St. Cloud Cathedral 3-0 in the quarterfinals and fell 2-3 (25-20, 20-25, 11-25, 25-17, 13-15) to eventual state champion North Branch in the semifinals at XCel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Seniors Bailey Berge and Peyton Suess were named to the all-state team. Suess, an outside hitter, was a finalist for the Ms. Baden Volleyball honor, awarded to the state's top player.

Suess had 19 kills - including the match winner - plus nine digs and four blocks against Cathedral. Freshman setter Maddie Converse had 34 assists, one ace, two digs and one block; Berge had 14 digs; junior Emilee Terry had six kills, two aces, five digs and four blocks; sophomore Mya Suess had seven kills and five blocks; and senior Caroline Braun had six kills and 10 digs.

The KoMets tied the fifth game with No. 4 North Branch 10-10 and trailed 14-13 before Cianna Selbitschka, the Vikings' all-state hitter, finished the match with her 30th kill.

Converse had 28 kills and four digs; Berge had 30 digs and one kill; Peyton Suess had 25 kills and 16 digs; Terry had 16 kills and 21 digs; sophomore Anna Braun had 19 assists and four digs; Caroline Braun had six kills, one ace and eight digs; and Mya Suess had six kills against the Vikings, who defeated No. 3 Marshall for the state title.

Peyton Suess had 20 kills and 50 assists against Concordia. Terry had 14 kills and 53 assists; Braun had seven kills and 21 assists; Mya Suess had seven kills and 15 assists; and sophomore Madison Cummings had three kills and eight assists.

K-M defeated No. 2-seeded Stewartville 3-1 in a Section 1AA sub-section match, and defeated Lake City 3-1 for the section title and a third consecutive state tournament berth.
