The Hayfield Vikings volleyball team went to battle with two more teams from the Hiawatha Valley League (HVL) this past week, the Goodhue Wildcats and the Kasson-Mantorville Komets.
Efforts were strong, but the Vikings were only able to take home one victory for the week.
Hayfield (16-3 overall, 7-1 HVL) faced off against Goodhue (7-12 overall, 1-7 HVL) at home this past Tuesday, where the Vikings have yet to be defeated.
The Vikings made quick work of the Wildcats, winning 3-0 and scores of 25-10, 25-20, 25-10.
Hayfield stats: Maggie Streightiff, 12 kills, 16 assists, 14 digs; Carrie Rutledge, 9 kills, 13 digs; Kate Kruger, 7 kills; Olivia Matti, 6 kills, 8 digs; Alexis Dudycha, 1 kill, 20 assists; Cela Carney, 19 digs.
The Vikings traveled to Kasson on Thursday, with a three-game win streak and boat load of confidence.
It was another huge match-up in the HVL pitting two state ranked teams, #5A Hayfield (16-4 overall, 7-2 HVL) and #12AA Kasson-Mantorville (12-8 overall, 6-1 HVL) against each other. It was Kasson-Mantorville's homecoming, which added extra emotion and excitement to the game.
In game one, the Komets came out very hot and were all over the Vikings quickly. The Komets led most of the game, but it was close at the end. Kasson-Mantorville ended up winning game one 25-23 and thereafter took over the match.
They had complete control of the Vikings in game two, winning easily 25-15. Determined not to get swept, the Vikings took an early lead in game three. The Komets had other ideas and were able to get back in the game, eventually winning 25-21.
Hayfield stats: Carrie Rutledge, 9 kills, 1 block, 16 digs; Kate Kruger, 7 kills, 2 blocks, 4 digs; Maggie Streightiff, 7 kills, 15 assists, 2 blocks, 14 digs; Katrina Thoe, 2 kills, 1 block; Alexis Dudycha, 11 assists, 1 block; Cela Carney, 18 digs, 1 ace.
Hayfield traveled to Waterville on Tuesday night to take on the #7 ranked Buccaneers in Class A. The Vikings return home for their final regular season match against Rochester Lourdes on Thursday.
