Byron High School shows 100% graduation rate

Byron Review staff

Byron High School exceeded Minnesota's overall high school graduation rate with a 100 percent rating. The state graduation rate is 82.7 percent.

Byron was one of 19 school districts in Minnesota to post a 100 percent four year graduation rate in 2017, up from its 2016 rate of 96.8 percent and 2015's 94.1 percent.

Statewide data shows a 4.3 percent increase in 2012. The state has a goal for Minnesota that by 2020 90 percent of Minnesota students will graduate in four years and no single student group's graduation rate will be below 85 percent.

"We are very cognizant of the efforts of all of our colleagues throughout the state to support the needs of Minnesota students which is represented in overall higher scores throughout the state," said Byron High School Principal Steve Willman. "We are very pleased with the graduation data we received. It is a testament to all the efforts of our staff from kindergarten to 12th grade, students, parents, families, and community to support our schools and learning. We continue to look for ways to effectively encourage, motivate and inspire our children to achieve, learn and grow."

"We are proud of the results we have achieved for our students and community," said School Board Chair Sharon Kreitinger. "A 100% graduation rate in 2017 is a remarkable achievement and is the result of hard work by dedicated teachers, staff, administration, and community.

"Together, they have done a phenomenal job of addressing barriers to learning, provide targeted support for our students and work together for the shared goal of student success. With each diploma earned, our students are better prepared for their future and strengthen our community as a whole. It is a privilege to see our students stretching and extending their abilities in pursuit of their post-high school goals."

Minnesota's graduation goal reflects the state's strong commitment to equity and ensuring every Minnesota student receives a high school diploma and is bolstered by the state's plan to identify for support any public high school with a four-year graduation rate below 67 percent overall, or for any student group, Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius said.

"The announcement that Minnesota graduation rates are rising is excellent news," said Byron Superintendent Dr. Joey Page.

"Our students in Byron have worked hard. They've had wonderful support from our dedicated teachers and staff and is another example of our district's efforts in becoming a renowned school system."

Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, Donita Stepan said, "We're thrilled," said Donita Stepan, direction of curriculum, instruction and assessment in Byron. "Excelling in high school opens doors to a future and provides a wealth of opportunities for our students. The educators in Byron will continue to work tirelessly to ensure we provide the skills necessary for our students to succeed in life and become contributing members of a strong workforce."
