1/18/2013 5:27:00 PM Senator Schmit appointed to agricultural research board, strengthens position as a leader on agriculture policy
On, Thursday, Sen. Matt Schmit was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI), an organization focusing on research and development of new agricultural products. The appointment complements Schmit's position as vice chair of the Senate Jobs, Agriculture and Rural Development committee and as a member of the Enviroment, Economic Development and Agriculture- Finance committees.
"Although my primary focus will be on balancing our state budget, growing jobs, and strengthening our local communities, I'm looking forward to contributing a strong voice and thoughtful perspective to agriculture discussions," Schmit said. "Active participation on the AURI board will complement my work on my senate agriculture committee assignments. I'm looking forward to a productive session."
Schmit joins other industry professionals, legislators, and non-profit leaders on the board. AURI was created and is funded by the Minnesota legislature to support research and development of new uses for Minnesota's agricultural products. AURI's efforts focus on supporting the development of new uses for agricultural by-products, creating new bio-based products and renewable energy sources, and new food products.
