Efforts underway for Byron High's post prom party

By David Richards

Topped perhaps only by graduation, prom can be a signature event in the life of a high school student.

And while the dance and dinner can be a special occasion, many students also look forward to post prom, and the nearly all-night festivities that go with it.

"I think it's extremely important to have a safe, alcohol-free place for the kids to go," said Tricia Oxley, post prom volunteer and mother of a junior.

The junior class is responsible for putting on the after-prom extravaganza and raising money for it, and those efforts have kicked off, with the help of junior students and parents led by Kara Christiansen.

Last year's fundraisers and donations raised roughly $12,000 for post prom, which is held at the Rochester Athletic Club.

There, students can indulge in food, games, entertainment and prizes until 4 a.m.

Oxley said safety is one of the main reasons behind post prom. And if a student leaves early, for instance, the parents are notified.

"I think the kids have a ball," Oxley said.

This year's fundraisers include selling Kwik Trip gift cards at Byron High School sporting events. The cards can be used for any Kwik Trip merchandise, including gas, with 10 percent going to post prom.

Also this month, Oxley said, The Bears Den is donating a portion of proceeds of its Tuesday night pizza sales, dine in or carry out. Donations to post prom can also be made through checks to Byron High School in care of post prom.

"Byron students are fortunate to have a fun, safe after-prom experience," Oxley said.
