As a way to celebrate its schools, Byron school district officials recently went live with its Facebook fan page.
The site, located at Facebook.com/Byronbears, allows visitors to view everything from photos to you tube videos on various school activities.
As of Dec. 27, the page had 206 likes.
"We really wanted it to be a rich experience," Jen Hegna, the district's director of informational learning technology, told the school board Dec. 18. "The best Facebook pages, we felt, gave an insight as to what it was like to be at those schools. It's more about celebrations."
Hegna said each school has a site administrator, and said for time purposes, each administrator won't post more than once per day.
She also said the intention of the page is not to replace any of the current tools the district has, such as the Byron Public Schools web site.
"We don't want this to replace anything," Hegna said.
"We want to showcase our teachers, students and why Byron Public Schools is a great place."
Hegna can also gather information from the site's analytics that can help determine the effectiveness of the page.
For instance, on Dec. 18, the page had 148 likes.
Hegna said through those likes, the district has the capability of reaching nearly 15,000 people based on the friends of the friends who have liked the page.
"I'm really excited about the analytics," she said.
As of Dec. 27, the page was filled with dozens of photos, from the middle school's robotics team to holiday celebrations and YouTube posts.
