Byron High School student government leads the charge for Homecoming

By Alex Long

From Kris Haeussinger's classroom at the High School, you can see the Elementary and Middle Schools, as well as most of the town of Byron.

It's fitting, since Haeussinger's room serves as the meeting place for the high school's student government. The group of almost 40 members has met there every Wednesday since the beginning of August to finalize homecoming plans for the upcoming school year.

"I'm always excited for homecoming week, but I'm excited because we get more organized every year. We get better and we learn as we go," said Haeussinger. "Our plans are pretty solidified for almost everything."

Those plans include homecoming coronation, the sales of shirts and buttons, activities and celebrations at the high school, the decoration of every classroom door during the week leading up to homecoming, dress-up days, and the annual post-game party.

At the end of the last school year, the 2013-2014 council voted Disney as the theme for the week. Homecoming coronation will be patterned after the movie "Tangled," and dress-up day themes will match movies such as "The Incredibles" for superhero day, or "Lilo and Stitch" for Hawaiian day.

"Margaret [Silhasek, Vice President] and Nick [Laning, President] presented to the staff on Monday, and the staff were really, really receptive to all of their plans," Haeussinger said.

That means that from now until October 4, the student council will be a flurry of planning, activities, and preparation.

"We have some subtle changes, but we're starting some really good traditions," said Haeussinger.
