Craig Schlichting is the new principal of Triton High School.

He was the middle school principal for the past 10 years.

"I don't see this as a promotion - just as a different job," he said. "I love this district. It's a great fit for me. I really like the staff. They are good to work with. And I'm lucky to have Mark (the new Middle School principal) on board."

Schlichting is a graduate of Spring Lake Park High School. He studied at the University of Wyoming and played defensive line on the football team.

"That was lots of fun," he said. "We won two Western Athletic Conference championships, played in two holiday bowls as well as the Senior and Blue Gray games as a senior."

He was drafted to play football for the Minnesota Vikings. He played in the preseason, but didn't make the cut.

"Their loss," his grandmother said.

He played for the Steelers on the practice squad and two years in the World League for the New York/New Jersey Knights.

"Then I finished my last semester at Wyoming," he said. "I played half a season for the Arena League in Cincinnati. Then I applied for a job at Triton teaching phy ed and health."

He began teaching at Triton in the fall of 1993 and became the Dean of Students and health teacher in 1996. Soon after he became the 7-12 Dean of Students. He started studying for his K-12 principal's endorsement and his master's degree while working at Triton.

Schlichting started working at the Triton Middle School and became principal in 2002.

"And I became the high school principal this year - and I'm happy!" he said.
