Through chattering teeth, the students were all smiles for a chilly 24th annual Zumbro Education District (ZED) Activity Day on May 16.
Hayfield hosted the traveling event this year. Special education students in grades 1 through 6 from Blooming Prairie, Byron, Hayfield, Kasson-Mantorville, Pine Island, Stewartville, Triton and ZED Circles/Connections were represented.
All students ran a race and they all were all winners at the end of the day and they all received a medal during closing ceremonies.
"This is a great event for the kids," Peter Hammer of ZED said. "They get to come out and have an activity day with their friends that they know from other districts."
ZED Activity Day started 24 years ago to give students with disabilities a chance to participate in a track and field day just like regular students do. "A lot of the students couldn't participate in their school's track and field day," Hammer explained. "So ZED Activity Day was started to give them a track and field day that all the special education students can partake in. All the students look forward to Activity Day."
Next year Kasson will host the 25th Anniversary of ZED Activity Day.
