Hayfield School Board Retirement for special education coordinator approved

By Tara Lindquist

The Hayfield School Board, on January 13, approved the resignation of Special Education Coordinator Dianna Orr. The resignation will be effective on June 30, 2014.

The school board and administration expressed their gratitude towards Orr for her dedication to the Special Education Program at the school.

"If we don't accept the resignation does that mean she can't leave," school board member Kathy Hegna Zelinske joked during the meeting. "We're going to be sad to see you go," Superintendent Ron Evjen said.

Orr has been the Special Education Coordinator for the district for sixteen years.

The board also approved hiring Jessica Clement as a special education paraprofessional to replace Emily Pennington who requested a leave of absence through the remainder of the school year.

The board also unanimously approved to increase their salaries from $1,000 per year to $1,200 per year and the chairperson salary to $1,500, the treasurer $1,450 and the negotiation committee an addition $250 per year on top of the increase.

The school board has not raised their salaries since 2010 and Evjen pointed out during the meeting that when budget cuts needed to be made in 2010 the board was the first entity to cut their salaries. He also added that this put the board about right in the middle of school board salaries in the region.

Other items on the agenda included the approval of:

• financial depositories as Citizens State Bank, Hayfield; Minnesota School District Liquid Asset Fund, Minneapolis; and First Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Sergeant and Brownsdale.

• delegation for electronic fund transfer for making payments to vendors and issuing payroll to Debra Wilson and Rose Srock

• legal representation from Adams, Rizzi & Sween P.A., Knutson, Flynn & Deans, P.A., and Ratwick Roszak & Maloney, P.A.

• the Star Herald as the official newspaper

The board will meet again on February 10 at 7 p.m. in the Brownsdale Elementary School Gym.
