Pastor Wilson from First Presbyterian Church speaks by the light of his cell phone during a blackout, which occurred during the baccalaureate service on May 22.

By Mary Nelson

Pastor Wilson from First Presbyterian Church in Hayfield addressed the Class of 2013 during Hayfield High School's Baccalaureate held on May 22. Right after the processional, there was a blackout - unplanned of course. The only lights in the gym were from the emergency lights by the doors. Pastor Wilson kept things moving.

The opening hymn "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" was sung in the dark except for those in the choir or audience who had cell phones. They used the light from them to read their music.

With no power in the gym there was no microphone so Pastor Wilson just spoke in his loud voice reading his notes with the light of his phone. He composed himself wonderfully, used a little humor, and went on with the scripture reading. About halfway through the reading the power came back on.

Pastor Wilson spoke to the graduates about how important stories are individually and culturally. Everyone has a story. They help define you. Not all stories have great ending. Some of your stories have limits. You can either be afraid or take risks.

"What you need to know is God has given you so much, so use it. Don't be afraid to use it. You have so many opportunities in life today. Don't play it safe. Take risks."
