Thirty-five teams with members ranging from 5th through 8th grade, from all seven ZED (Zumbro Education District) schools, competed during the winter season in USAT (United States Academic Triathlon). Hayfield had three teams this year - two teams from 5th- 6th grade (Challengers), coached by Kathy Blanchard and one from 7th-8th grade (X-Trainers), coached by Sarah Gunderson.
The Academic Triathletes of Hayfield finished the 2013 season with three Mary Ann Berdan Creativity Awards for our Challenger and X-Trainer Teams. Our Challengers placed second in two meets, Kasson in December and in Hayfield in January. They placed third in February at the meet in Stewartville.
"AT" as it is called, is a creative thinking skills competition that teaches and rewards creative and divergent thinking process, cooperative brainstorming, general intellect, leadership, and a flare for the dramatic.

Courtney Ellis, Rachel Pack, Diane Himmer, Cela Carney, Carly Hauschild, Taylor Burt, Spencer Phoenix, Hannah Bigelow-Ehmke, Lila Gronseth, Jadyn Fritcher, Logan Apel, Bryce Gerber, Hannah Breault, Gia Heimermann and Payne O'Brien.
The season closed with the Regional Tournament in Byron on March 1st. This is the 20th season that Hayfield has participated in Academic Triathlon. The AT competition for the ZED Schools is organized by Becky Remmle from the Zumbro Education District in Byron.
