Triton School Board Joyce makes first report

By Larry Dobson

Triton Superintendent Brett Joyce gave his first superintendent's report near the end of the Triton board's regular meeting Monday, January 13, which included electing officers and appointing committees for the new year.

Joyce expressed enthusiasm for his new role at Triton and said he has already met with city officials in West Concord and Dodge Center. He plans to meet with Claremont officials yet this week. Among the subjects he discussed in West Concord is arranging for an activity/academic bus for students in West Concord and Claremont. With Dodge Center he said he discussed the grant for a safe route to school path the city is working on and for which it seeks school district participation.

Joyce said he is also gathering information about a turf field for sports, for which the district has been offered a $400,000 donation if it makes a decision by February. He said the total cost will be in excess of $600,000 and that he is exploring the possibility of having prep work done by Ellingson Drainage. Student Council Representative Carly Gilliland questioned whether the project was really appropriate use of funds.

Board members discussed whether the problems associated with replacing and disposing of it when it wears out make doing it impractical. After discussion, the board directed Joyce to put the subject on the agenda for a study session and gather more information to present then.

Joyce also discussed with the board an email he received from Dan Blaisdell at McNeilus Steel requesting a proposal for providing students in grades 9-12 with computer tablets beginning in 2014.

Jon Streiff was elected board chairman, Duane Bartel vice chairman, Dale Jensen clerk and Bryce Kleinwort treasurer. No changes were made in committee assignments.

The board approved the resignation of Mark Ellingsen, who is going to work at Ellingson Drainage, and payment of bills totaling $644,026.57. It also approved:

• a two-day trip by the boys and girls golfers to attend a golf tournament at Jordan, MN on May 9-10, 2014;

• an overnight trip for Business Professionals of America student members March 8-9, 2014.

When regular business was concluded and Chairman Streiff gave board members an opportunity to ask any questions they might have, Chad Johnson questioned the arrangements made for Joyce and Middle School Principal Craig Schlichting to cover the vacant high school principal position duties. Johnson also questioned whether Joyce had asked or negotiated for $50,000 to cover the extra duties he will be taking on temporarily. Joyce explained that he had not requested a specific amount and explained that he and Schlichting are putting in extra hours on weekends to make sure everything necessary gets done.

The next regular board meeting is February 10, 2014. The board will also hold a study session on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the school.
