Triton School Board Board approves 20% cut in levy

By Larry Dobson

Triton School Board members Monday night approved a 2014 levy of $1,822,251 to be charged the taxpayers of the district, a figure that is $463,114 less than in 2013, a difference of 20.26%. Property taxes include levies from the county and either a city or a township in addition to the school levy, so what effect this will have on individual property taxes will vary.

Dodge Center City Administrator Lee Mattson addressed the board with a request that the board express either support or opposition to a city request for the district to help fund the local share required for a MNDOT Transportation Alternative Grant (TAG) to install sidewalks along County H and other walkways students use to walk to and from the school. At this time, Mattson said he is estimating costs at $250,000 to $300,000, of which the local share would be 20% plus engineering expenses. He did not require a commitment from the board but just to know if members were interested enough to make it sensible for the city to develop a more definite plan and draft a grant application. He said there is no guarantee the grant will be approved. After discussing the dangers to students along County H and where the district might find available funds, a motion of support for proceeding with the grant application was passed.

In other business, the board approved:

• payment of bills totaling $522,609.48;

• Resignation/Retirement for Charles Hoffmann Effective January 15, 2014;

• Resignation/Retirement for Dianne Duffee Effective December 1, 2013;

After giving his report at the end of the meeting, Superintendent Robert Kelly said goodbye to the board after 13 and a half years. This was his last meeting with the board as superintendent.

Next regular school board meeting will be held January 13, 2014 in the Triton High School Media Center.
