Triton School Board Parents raise coaching issues

By Larry Dobson

During Open Forum, a number of Triton parents with daughters in the 6th grade basketball program approached the Triton School Board Monday night, May 19, with complaints about coaching decisions being made by Coach Peggy Moran regarding assistant coaches, about whether she should attend girls sport events and about continuing her contract with the school.

Melissa Kubat, who did most of the speaking for the parents present, said she and the other parents objected to Tracy Petersohn no longer coaching and that they felt there was something personal in Moran's decision to change coaches. She said they feel Moran's decisions are having a negative effect on girls in girls sports and that they don't want Moran coaching their children. They said they feel Tracy has brought good things to the program, knows the girls and invests time, and that since he is no longer coaching, their children are dropping out of the program.

Superintendent Brett Joyce explained that the process for dealing with such complaints is:

1. Discuss problems with Moran and the Athletic Director;

2. Discuss problems with the principal;

3. Discuss problems with superintendent;

4. If problems have not then been resolved, issues can be placed on the agenda for board consideration.

He and other board members expressed understanding of the parents' concerns, and said their goal with the district's sports programs is to see that Triton students have a good experience in the programs, both athletically and academically.
