The Minnesota State Wrestling tournament concluded this past weekend and Byron's Brian Bertram left with a sixth place finish to medal for the 2nd time in his career.
"We're happy for Brian to place especially for not even knowing if he was going to be able to return from breaking his leg," said Ryan Radke, head Byron wrestling coach. "He worked as hard as he could and placed sixth in state with only six days of wrestling under his belt. I think he could have won a State Title if things were different but he was dealt a certain hand and played those cards well.
"I'm extremely proud of him that he didn't cash the season in when he broke his leg and never gave up hope on wresting at State. He lost 3-2 to the eventual State Champion and wrestled every match as hard as he could go."
Bertram becomes the third wrestler from Byron to place twice at state. In addition, Bertram was selected to the MWCA Academic All State team for the 182 pound Division and is also the third wrestler from Byron to receive this award.
"Being named to the MWCA Academic All State is an extreme honor," Radke said.
"They take only the top two from each weight from around the State from all three classes and use criteria from grades to wrestling to state accolades. It shows the you can excel on and off that mat and you can be extremely successful in both areas. Some of the States elite wrestlers are on this list and it shows the correlation between hard work and success."
