Wildcat girls hockey sends record to 14-5 with two more victories
Byron's Darby Dodds scores hat trick

By Ruth Hanson

It isn't unheard of, but it isn't often that a hockey player scores three goals in the same game - a so-called "hat trick!"

Darby Dodds, a Byron senior, did just that on Friday, January 3, as the Wildcats beat St. Paul United 7-3 at Drake Arena in St. Paul.

"The girls played a fast-paced game," Coach Jeremy Gunderson said. "They stayed out of the penalty box during the whole game, which was good. And getting seven goals was great! As well as Darby getting that hat trick!"

Dana Rasmussen scored one goal in the first period with assists by Bella Wagner and Emily Gunderson. Wagner scored one goal in the second period with assists by Rasmussen and Jacie Hoehn. Dodds scored one goal in the second period with assists by Molly Shelton and Brede Postier, a second goal with assists by Rasmussen and Hollywood Hermanson and a third goal unassisted. Rasmussen scored a goal in the third period with assists by Gunderson and Elly Strunk. Shelton scored a goal with assists by Breanna Westrum and Barret Boyer.

Gabby Suhr made 27 saves. Catherine Johnson made 26 saves for St. Paul United.

The next day, on Saturday, January 4, the Dodge County Wildcats beat North St. Paul by a score of 4-0 at home.

"This game was a team effort, with the girls playing good defense," Coach Gunderson said. "Gabby Suhr, our freshman goalie, got a shutout. It was nice to see our defense step up. Jacie Hoehn, a defense man, got two goals, which is rare."

Dodds scored one goal in the first period. Rasmussen scored one goal in the second period with assists by Gunderson and Hoehn. Hoehn scored one of her goals in the second period with assists by Dodds and Rasmussen. She scored her other goal in the third period with assists by Gunderson and Rasmussen.

Suhr made 19 saves. Marit Larson, the St. Paul goalie, made 38.

The Wildcats will travel to Winona on Tuesday, St. Peter on Friday and Rochester Century on Saturday. Their next home game is against Holy Family on January 18.
