The Hayfield boys basketball team hosted Redwood Valley on Monday to play a rescheduled championship game of the Redwood Valley Holiday Tournament. The boys were sent home on Saturday due to a blizzard warning.
"They still wanted to play us, so they came out here," Coach Chris Pack explained.
Redwood Valley was ranked number eight in the AA at the time of the game.
The boys struggled throughout the game and the score was 50-35 with 10:30 left in the game. They battled back in the last ten minutes to end the game tied with Redwood Valley at 62 points putting them into overtime. Cole Kruger scored on the first possession in overtime and then three free throws were made in the final minute of overtime, they held Redwood Valley scoreless, winning the game 67-62.
On Friday they played the Southland rebels. "We jumped ahead early and played really well on offense in the first half," Pack said. "Building a 52-25 halftime lead." The final score was Hayfield 81, Southland 51.
On Saturday the boys hosted NRHEG, who had a record of 9-1 going into the game. "This was a good test for us," Pack said. "We played great in the first half and led 39-24 at half." They started the second half and grew a 59-35. NRHEG responded and scored 17 straight points to cut the lead by seven. "We regrouped and held on for the win down the stretch." -Hayfield 73, NRHEG 66.
