Hayfield team places fourth

Hayfield wrestlers competed in the Filmore Central/ Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton (FCLMC) Holiday individual wrestling tournament on Saturday, December 21.
There were twelve teams that participated. Hayfield had ten wrestlers competing. Of the ten, eight wrestled in the finals for 1-6th place. It was a tough tournament if you were a wrestler that didn't make it to the semi-finals because the best you could do was 5th place. For some wrestlers that meant you had to wrestle five matches. They went 4-1 on the day for 5th place. Hayfield placed fourth as a team.
They started out in 8th place, then moved to 7th place but in the last round all but one wrestler won their match which scored them some big points to move them into 4th place.
Hayfield had one champion - Mason Moreno at 132 lb. He pinned Hunter Johnson in 19 seconds and Tye Bentz (Chat) in 43 seconds to get into the finals against Ryan Keach (DE) in which he won by a 17-5 major decision.
Dylan Arndt placed 3rd at 170 lbs. He beat Brandon Turner (GMLOK) by a fall in 1:04 and then won 6-2 against Brenton Ring (PEM).
A loss to #2 seed Tom Henry (FCLMC) by a fall in 2:27 put Arndt in the third place match against Mason Henke of Winona. Arndt pinned Henke in 3:58.
Cole Rasmussen (120) placed 4th. He pinned Sean Lafleur (I) in 2:47. Rasmussen lost to #1 seed Ty Vansickle (Chat) by a fall in 58 seconds. In his 3rd place match he lost to #2 seed Joe Miller (PEM) by a 19-2 tech fall.
Five wrestlers placed 5th for Hayfield. Jackson Heydt (106) won his 5th place match by a fall in 3:42 against Logan Sass (Lac). Heydt beat Sass in the pigtail round 8-1. Heydt lost to Michael Nelson (DE) 7-1. He then went on to beat Jack Vasalaar (Win) 11-6 and Jacob Elit (PEM) 11-2.
Morgen Moreno (113) lost by a tech fall to Carter Hubka (Dec), had two byes, and then pinned Chatfield's Maleek Hussein in 5:59. Cam Stadler (126) pinned Conner Swartout (PI) in 58 seconds. A 10-4 loss to DE's Tanner Welsh brought Stadler through the wrestle backs getting wins by falls against Luke Janecek (I)in 1:55 and Ryan Clark (Stew) in 4:49.
Connor Nelson (152) beat Brandon Sweet (Stew) 8-6 but lost to #2 seed Connor Hanson (FCLMC) 8-2. Nelson came up through the wrestle backs getting wins against Jake Timm (Win) 4-2, Alec Fjelstul (Dec) fall in 3:31, and Ryan Kottschade (PEM) 9-8.
Jesus Fernandez (182) won his first match against Dalton Lundy (Chat) by a fall in 2:26. He lost a close match against Jamie Gehling (Stew) 5-4. In the wrestle backs, Fernandez received a bye and then victories against Colton Pike (PI) 10-1 and Dalton Lundy (fall 2:25). Also competing for Hayfield were Lane Canny (138) and Trey Chatman (285).
Hayfield will not see any mat action until Saturday, January 4, when they travel to Mapleton for an individual tournament. Chatfield won the tournament as a team with 195 points. 2nd - PEM 153.5, 3rd - Dover-Eyota 123, 4th - Hayfield 113, 5th - Decorah 110.5, 6th - FCMLC 109, 7th - Stewartville 95, 8th - Pine Island 93, 9th - Winona 54, 10th - GMLOK 39, 11th - Irondale 36, 12th - LaCrescent 33.
