#3 seed in Section 1A tournament
By Tony Benson
Coming off of a stretch of four tough matches, the Bears were excited to find out where they would wind up in the section tournament.
By dropping games to Winona and Kasson-Mantorville, but earning ties with Austin and Rochester Lourdes the bears were hopeful for a #2 or #3 seeding. Not surprising Rochester Lourdes and Austin took the #1 and #2 seeds leaving the #3 for the Bears. At the #3 spot, the Bears hosted two home matches starting with #14 Lake City.
The Bears didn't play particularly well against the Tigers but did enough to earn a 1-0 win. Mitchell Forrest Enerson had the only goal for the Bears. Nate Levy and the defense in front of him were the stars of the game. Levy had a save in the second half that will probably go down as the best save a Byron goalkeeper has ever made. "The Lake City coaches and the referees came up to me to praise Nate's work in goal after the game," said coach Tony Benson.
"Levy and the defense of Nate Bahr, Buster Meyer, Alex Laning, Tyler Coble, and Ben Gibson played outstanding as a unit!," Benson added.
The second section playoff game was an opportunity to avenge a previous loss to the Red Wing Wingers. The loss was the worst loss the Bears had suffered all season by a result of 4-1 in the Lake City Tournament. "We know how to win at home or on the road, but the field we played on in Lake City was one of the smallest fields in the section. Not ideal for the type of soccer we play," Benson said.
The Bears showed early on in the match that the Wingers would have to do something spectacular to break the Bears defense. Fortunately, nothing spectacular came and the Bears defense shut down every Winger attack, keeping the section tournament record without a blemish, with a final of 2-0. "The whole team played great defense with leadership and grit coming from the back line again," said Benson.
The goals were both scored by Mitchell Forrest Enerson in the second half of the match. Enerson brought his season tally to 10 goals on the season by scoring all three of Byron's section goals. Next up for the Bears are the Austin Packers. Byron and Austin drew level at 1-1 at the end of the regular season schedule.
Also, at the end of the regular season the All- HVL team was named with four of those players coming from Byron.
Nick Sigrist- Senior Midfielder
Nate Bahr- Senior Defender
Mitchell Forrest Enerson- Senior Midfielder
Nate Levy- Senior Goalkeeper
"I couldn't be happier for the guys who were names to the All- HVL team this year. They all are very deserving of the distinction, but I know all of them would tell you that they wouldn't have been able to reach that accomplishment without the help and great play of their teammates," said coach Benson.
