Lake City (3-3) surged to a 28-0 halftime lead and held on for a 28-8 win on Byron's Homecoming Oct. 4.

Following an hour lightning delay just after halftime, the Bears scored their lone touchdown when quarterback Jonny Mracek found Kip Knutson for a 20-yard strike.

"They were more physical than us in the first half," head coach John Austinson said. "They took it to us, and we didn't put up much of a fight. Then penalties hurt us."

Mracek, who played in his first game in three weeks following a back injury and a slight concussion, completed six of 26 passes for 106 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Knutson led Byron receivers with two catches for 65 yards, while Dan Fujan rushed six times for 27 yards.

Noah Schutte also caught a Mracek pass for a two-point conversion during a Byron fake extra point.

On defense, just like on offense, the Bears had some bright spots.

Dustin Davis led the team in tackles with 11, while both Michael Carl and Mark Krings hauled in interceptions.

Next up for the Bears (2-4) is an away game at La Crescent (1-5) Oct. 11.

Austinson said his team needs to gain confidence heading into the last part of the season.

"I think we'll match up just fine," Austinson said of La Crescent. "We just have to go in there and execute."
