As the calendar turned to September and students returned to classes, it was business as usual for the Hayfield Volleyball girls. The Vikings traveled to Triton last Tuesday to take on the Cobras. The evening was a little steamy as the fans poured into watch two very scrappy teams duke it out. The Vikings prevailed winning 3-0 with scores of 25-21, 25-13, and 25-13.
On Thursday, the Goodhue Wildcats came to town to put their undefeated record to the test. This was a very good match-up against two of the smaller teams in the HVL. It was a battle that went back and forth all night. But at the end of the night, it was again the Hayfield Vikings that were victorious. The Vikings won 3-0 with scores of 17-25, 20-25, and 15-25.
Last weekend in the Hayfield Invitational, the Vikings took second overall losing to Goodhue in the championship. Earlier in the day, the Vikings defeated Lyle/Pacelli 25-23, 16-25, 3-15, Blooming Prairie 14-25, 17-25, and Lewiston Altura 19-25, 12-25. In the championship, the Wildcats came in with a score to settle after losing previously on Thursday. It was a tough match, but the Vikings lost 2-1 with scores of 23-25, 25-20, and 15-7. Stats from the tournament had Dani Wagner finishing with 29 kills, 9 blocks 1 ace, Johanna Bungum with 23 kills and 35 digs, Maggie Streightiff with 12 kills, 4 blocks and 18 set assists, Sydney Tapp with 9 kills and 15 digs, Bhrett Zahnle with 3 aces and 34 digs, and Jessica Foster with 6 kills, 1 ace and 54 set assists.
This week the Vikings will have two extremely tough conference match-ups. They will travel to Cannon Falls to face the Bombers on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Stewartville Tigers will come to town to face the Vikings.
