Three Byron athletes ended their summers in style.
Sisters Hannah and Isabel Higgins, along with neighbor Isabelle Erickson, competed at the Hy-Vee IronKids U.S. triathlon championships Aug. 31 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The three qualified for the honor after placing well in regional action earlier this summer.
"I'm extremely proud," said Jennifer Higgins, mother of Hannah and Isabel.
"It was an amazing event."
Hannah Higgins, who competed in the age 13 seniors female division despite being only 12, finished in 45th place out of 75 athletes with a time of 52 minutes and 40 seconds.
She swam 300 meters, biked eight miles and ran for two more.
"My best event was my swim because I had my fastest time of the season," the Byron middle school student said.
Hannah Higgins, who has competed in more than 10 triathlons, swam the 300-meter swim in a time of 5 min., 23 sec.; biked the eight miles in 27 min., 4 sec.; and ran the final two miles in 17 min., 6 sec.
Not bad for someone who had a height disadvantage on most of the field.
"She's like a foot shorter than anyone else," Jennifer Higgins said. "But she loved it."
Isabel Higgins and Isabelle Erickson, both 9, competed in the age 9 female intermediate division and finished in the middle of the pack.
"It was fun," Isabel said. "I liked the biking the best."
More than 1,400 athletes in all divisions competed from 36 different states.
Isabel said she celebrated the day by going to Adventureland in Des Moines after the race.
"My favorite ride was this one that was kind of a bus and it flipped upside down," she said.
There's that style again.
