Let the Track season begin!

By Kellie Baker

When you look out the window and see the piles of snow, it definitely doesn't look like the spring sports season is upon us. Even though the Hayfield Vikings can't see their track, it doesn't mean the team hasn't been preparing for the upcoming season. Byron hosted the first meet of the season indoors last Thursday at RCTC. With a couple of snow days, a couple early releases, and cut practices due to the boys basketball team competing at State, the team only had four practices before the first meet was underway. Even with such few practices and everyone being so nervous, the first meet went really well. The girls finished the meet with eleven new personal records.

In the running events, sophomore Madison Heydt, placed 5th in the 55m dash with a time of 8.38 seconds and 5th in the 200m dash with a time of 30.99 seconds. In the long jump, she placed 3rd with a jump of 13-06 and her best performance of the night was in the 400m dash placing in 2nd.

Taking 5th place in the 4x200m relay was a freshmen team of Karlie Clemens, Elizabeth Klocke, Madison Booms, and anchoring by Alyssa Klocke. Alyssa started off her distance medley team to a 3rd place finish with teammates Kayli Hetrick, Caitlyn Tempel, and Caitlyn Severson. Elizabeth Klocke also had a 4th place long jump of the evening with a distance of 13-02.5.

In the 800m run, senior Alexis Anderson looked strong as she came into a 3rd place finish with a time of 3:08 with her seventh grade teammate, Caitlyn Severson, behind her in 4th place with a time of 3:13. Anderson also had a 3rd place finish in the 4x400m relay with teammates Caitlyn Tempel, Sydney Schmidt, and Rachel Czaplewski.

In the high jump, the Hayfield girls took 3rd, 4th, and 6th place to start the season. Those three individuals were freshmen Savanna Cordle, senior Rachel Czaplewski, and eighth grader, Sophia Waldner.

The team thanks everyone for coming out and supporting them. The girls are hoping the temperature rises so that all these snow piles disappear soon so you can all come cheer on them again soon outdoors. We hope to see you all at the track soon!
