The Hayfield boys basketball team finished their regular season with a convincing 87-60 victory at Medford on Thursday. The Vikings jumped out to a double-digit lead early in the game and were sparked in the first half by a couple reserves. Matt Bergstad and Drew Streightiff combined to score 16 points during the first half, one in which the Vikings led 40-33.
Hayfield scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 49-33 lead and led 72-48 with eight minutes remaining. The Vikings continued their torrid offensive pace and put up a season-high 87 points.
Cole Kruger led the Vikings with 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals. Matt Bergstad scored a career-high 13 points and finished 5-5 from the field, including three three-pointers. Drew Streightiff also scored a career high 13 points off the bench and added five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Brady Kramer chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Jeremy Stuart finished with a double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Vikings shot exactly 50% from the field (33-66) and outrebounded the Tigers 43-28.
Monday night the Vikings played Medford again, this time at home in the opening round of the Sub-Section 2AA South playoffs. The Vikings jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, but Medford hung around the rest of the half and only trailed 32-29 at the half. The Vikings once again opened the second half strong, this time scoring the first 10 points to take a 42-29 lead. Medford battled though and made six three-pointers alone in the second half to keep the game somewhat close. The Vikings missed 16 free throws in the game, finishing 18-34, but made enough down the stretch to put the game away.
Trevor Anderson led the Vikings with a career-high 29 points, including 7-13 on three-pointers. Cole Kruger added 18 points and six assists, and Brady Kramer chipped in 13 points and four steals. Hayfield shot 53.7% from the field (22-41), including 8-17 on threes.
The Vikings will now face #2 seed Southland on Thursday at Mankato. The Rebels defeated the #3 seeded Vikings 65-58 on February 21.
