No Hayfield wrestlers advance to State

By Mary Nelson

Hayfield just missed being represented at the 2013 state wrestling tournament this year. Connor Nelson placed third at 152 lbs for the team. He didn't get a true second match since he lost to the second place finisher Drew Sathrum of K-W. Nelson was the #2 seed. He had a bye his first round and then pinned FCLMC's Josh Jones in 2:42 to advance to the semi-finals on Saturday against #3 seed Drew Sathrum. Nelson lost to Sathrum 4-0. He came through the wrestle-backs beating Lake City's Derek Bremer 10-5 and then faced Triton's Alex Head for 3rd place. Nelson was down 2-0 in the middle of the third period when he scored a reversal as well as a three point near-fall to win 5-2. Mason Moreno placed 5th at 138 lb for Hayfield. Moreno had a tough bracket. He won his two matches on Friday beating Lake City's Ryan Hanson 16-2 and D-E's Ben Boynton 7-5. He faced the #1 seed Alex Hafner of Chatfield in the semis losing 13-8. Moreno had a better match against Hafner on Saturday than on their first meeting in Lake City's tournament. Moreno lost a close one to Pine Island's Mitchell Kukson 6-5 which put him in the 5th place match with Boynton again. Moreno won 6-4. Placing sixth for Hayfield were senior Isaac Wangen (113) and sophomore Cam Stadler (126). These two weights were also stacked with talent. Wangen faced #1 seed Joey Majerus from Z-M losing 10-0. Wangen then beat K-W's Bradley Kish 2-0. In Wangen's next match against #3 seed Carston Damman, he was down 6-0 in the third period when he escaped and put Damman on his back to win by a fall in 4:53. On Saturday, Wangen lost to #4 seed Chatfield's Ty VanSickle by a fall in 42 seconds. Wangen lost his 5th place match to D-E's Michael Otomo by a fall in 2:26. Cam Stadler started with a bye and then faced #3 seed Kyle Drehmel of Goodhue who ended up being the 126lb champion. In the wrestle-backs Stadler had a bye, pinned St. Charles Lane Helm in 3:49, and then pinned D-E's Dakota Welsh in eleven seconds. Stadler would lose to #4 seed Jace Clawiter of K-W 14-4. Lake City's Andrew Schmidt then beat Stadler in the 5th place match 9-0. Also competing for Hayfield were Morgan Moreno (106), Chris Johnson (132), Dylan Arndt (145), Jesus Fernandez (170), and Trey Chatman (HWT). Hayfield is graduating one senior, Isaac Wangen. The coaches are hoping their team will get healthy in the off-season as many were out with injuries for most of the season allowing for many forfeits during team competitions. They should have an experienced team next year with many juniors and seniors. Hayfield will have their wrestling awards banquet on Sunday, March 3 at the Hayfield Legion starting at 5 pm. If interested in attending the meal, contact Lana Mindrup.
