Despite a tough recent stretch, The Byron boys basketball team, 19-3 overall, have clinched the Hiawatha Valley League gold division with a 11-1 league record.

The Bears were edged by Hayfield 47-46 in Byron Feb. 8, were outscored by Fairmont 63-42 at the Target Center Feb. 9 and then defeated Lourdes 49-46 in Byron Feb. 12.

With the exception of the first game of the season and the Feb. 8-9 games, the Bears have been dominant.

"It was close all night long," said head coach Kerry Linbo, of the contest against the Vikings. "It was quite the atmosphere. We had a packed house. It was awesome."

Jack Nelson led Byron with 18 points in the game, while Hayfield's Cole Kruger finished with double digits as well.

Against Fairmont, the Bears struggled offensively.

"We shot our lowest percentage of the season," Linbo said. "We shot 27 percent from the floor."

Linbo susubstituted fresh legs, hoping the change in lineup would make a difference.

It worked for awhile, as the Bears were down just two at halftime.

"But we came out in the second half the same way we started the first," Linbo said.

Brandon Schubert led Byron with eight points.

Against Lourdes, it was a different story.

Nelson scored 14 points to lead the Bears, with Cody Baumbach knocked down two big three-point baskets.

Joe Smith ended the night with 11.

"Our kids and their kids always get ready to play each other," Linbo said. "A bounce of the ball here or there and it could have gone the other way."

Byron also beat Lourdes 62-59 back on Dec. 7. The Bears played at Goodhue Feb. 16. Results were not available by press time. They host Lake City tonight.
