Hayfield wrestlers left the state for the first time in quite a while (many years) for a wrestling tournament held in Cresco, Iowa on January 5 in hopes of seeing some tough competition and some new faces. They attended the 2013 Chris Flanagan Invitational at Crestwood High School. There were ten schools that participated in the individual tournament - Blooming Prairie, Cedar Falls, Crestwood, Decorah, FCLMC, Goodhue, Rochester JM, Southland, and Turkey Valley. Cam Stadler (126 lb) placed the highest for the Vikings. He won his first round match against Trent Tweten of Decorah 7-5. Due to an injury to Jay Wehrenberg of Rochester, Stadler advanced to the finals against the #1 seed from Goodhue, Kyle Drehmel. Stadler had a tough time staying with Drehmel but he fought through the match for the full six minutes losing 16-2. Connor Nelson (152 lb) started the day against Justin King of Cedar Falls winning 6-2. He then faced the #2 seed from Decorah, senior Hans Holkesvik. Holkesvik dominated Nelson winning 17-4. Holkesvik went on to win the championship match against Goodhue's Mitch Breuer 9-6. Nelson then beat Blooming Prairie's Tyler Cozine 6-2 which put him in the 3rd place match against Rochester's Hayden Herzog. Nelson pinned Herzog right before the end of the second period. Jax Bauer place 6th at 120 lbs. Bauer had a bye then lost to the #2 seed Hunter Slifka of Crestwood HS by a fall in 29 seconds. Bauer came through the wrestlebacks beating Albert Zammarripa of Blooming Prairie 19-4. He then lost by a fall in 54 seconds to Dirk Clark of Decorah, and had to injury default his fifth place match. Dylan Arndt placed 5th at 145 lbs. He had a bye his first round and then pinned Riley Heumann of Goodhue in 3:30. Arndt would lose by a tech fall to the #2 seed Eric Buckendahl of Turkey Valley. After getting pinned by Dakota Rasmusson of Crestwood HS in 1:28, Arndt came back with a pin of his own in 4:39 against FCLMC's Trevor Barnes. Jesus Fernandez placed 6th losing to Charles Dahling of Goodhue by a fall in 1:01. He lost to #1 seed, undefeated Niko Anderson of FCLMC by a tech fall in the first round. A win by injury default and a fall in 3:41 by Timmy Vanderwiel of Rochester put him in the 5th place match against Dahling.
Also wrestling for Hayfield were Cole Rasmussen (106), Morgan Moreno (113), Andrew Becker (138), Garrison Mindrup (160), and Trey Chatman (220). Hayfield was supposed to travel to Arlington for a team tournament on Saturday, January 12 but they had to pull out of it due to injuries. Hayfield will host Blooming Prairie on Thursday, January 17 for Parent's Night. On Saturday, January 19, Hayfield will hold their annual Invitational tournament which starts at 10 am.
