Local youth football wraps up season

By David Richards

The future is bright.

One hundred seventy five youth hit the gridiron with the Byron, Kasson-Mantorville Youth Football Association this season. All athletes were from the Byron/KM school districts.

"The goal of BKM youth football is to develop and promote the ideals of responsibility, hard work, sportsmanship, teamwork and fellowship within a safe and positive environment," the association's mission statement states. "These goals will be accomplished by providing a structured program designed to educate both participants and parents in all aspects of football. The BKM program is committed to providing a program that maintains the highest standards and guarantees a fun, positive experience for everyone involved."

BKM is open to boys and girls going into third and sixth grades.

Cost is $75, with helmets, shoulder pads, a jersey with the player's last name printed on the back and mouth guards provided. Pants and shoes are the responsibility of the player.

The athletes are separated into two leagues, third and fourth graders together, consisting of six teams, and fifth and sixth graders together, consisting of four teams.

"We try to even the teams out by having both Byron and KM kids on each team," said Bob Brown, association president.

"This gives kids an opportunity to meet and play with kids outside of their own school."

Practices are held in Byron at the middle school, with the games being played on Saturdays in Kasson at the North Park field.

Games are refereed by certified adult refs, along with student refs who are Kasson and Byron high school football players.

"At this level, we stress the basics of football and teach kids how to tackle properly, block, basic play calling/formations, kicking/punting the ball and good sportsmanship," Brown said.

The association has eight board members: Brown, president; Ken Kremers, vice president; Jeff Underwood, treasurer; Steve Rogne, secretary; Chad Sorenson; Kane Kline; Ken Douglas; and Dave Dodds.
