Former Byron school board member Chris Douglas once said that every student athlete should get to play in front of a packed house at least once.

For both the Byron and Kasson girls and boys basketball teams, that came true Dec. 5 in Byron.

In a rare opportunity when the boys and girls played in the same location on the same night, Byron (6-5 overall) broke open a close few minutes to defeat Kasson (5-8 overall) 63-28.

It was the Bears first win over the Komets in a decade.

"They're an experienced and very balanced team," Kasson head coach Ryan Haraldson said.

Byron found success both inside and outside.

Post Ayoka Lee, now healthy after a previous ankle injury, led with a team-high 26 points.

Hailey Braaten and Lexi Glynn both proved crucial on the perimeter and finished in double digits.

"It's nice to be able to hit on shots both inside and outside," Byron head coach Darren Nelson said. "And defensively, we did a nice job holding them to less than 30 points."

Kasson cut the Bears early lead to 14-11 before Byron found its groove.

In a only a few minutes, Glynn connected on three, three-point baskets, which were then complemented by pair of inside baskets by Lee.

"Going into it, we felt we had a chance," Lee said. "We continue to do a good job keeping our composure."
