By Kasey Krekling,

Girls basketball coach

With the holiday season comes the annual tradition of Hayfield hosting a boys and girls holiday basketball tournament. The Hayfield Lady Vikes opened up the four team tournament with an HVL matchup against the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights.

Hayfield came out on fire from long range in the first half as the Lady Vikes connected on ten first half 3-pointers. The Knights also had some sharp shooters that kept the game close through the first half as Hayfield took a 41-33 lead into halftime.

The second half saw Hayfield go on a huge run and the lead reached as high as 29 points. A great offensive performance all around resulted in an 86-59 victory.

Scoring: Elecia Brown 19, Olivia Matti 18, Carrie Rutledge 15, Maggie Streightiff 15, Kate Kruger 5, Caitlyn Severson 4, Emma Holst 4, Abby Stasko 2, Brooke Bungum 2, and Jaelynn Therring 2.

Waiting in the championship game of the holiday tournament was a game with the No. 1 state ranked Lyle-Pacelli Athletics. The Athletics are led by 6'5" Mankato State recruit Kristi Fett. The game started well for Hayfield as they hit some early 3-pointers as they went out to an 11-8 lead. That would be the last time Hayfield would have the lead in the game as Fett started to dominate in the paint.

Hayfield tried many different styles of defense but none of them seemed to slow down Fett as she ended up finishing the game with 36 points and an Athletic victory 66-49.
