Kasey Krekling pitches at the state tournament vs. Carver.

The Dodge County Diamondbacks received a bye into the second round of the state class C amateur baseball tournament by being the top seed out of their region.

Carver played New York Mills in the first round of the tournament and was victorious 11-0 to setup a second round game against the D-Backs.

The game did not start well for Dodge County. Four hits and an error led to four runs in the top of the first inning for Carver.

The Diamondbacks answered back with two runs off four hits in the bottom of the first inning to make the score 4-2.

After a rough first inning, D-Backs starter Kasey Krekling settled in and delivered seven straight scoreless innings of pitching. The D-Backs made it a one run game on a solo homerun from Brendan Knoll in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Dodge County took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two RBI single from AJ Yusten. In the top of the ninth inning Carver was able to get runners on first and third with one out.

Starter Kasey Krekling was relieved on the mound by Stewartville-Racine draftee Tyler Schmitz. Schmitz walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. The next batter hit a groundball to shortstop that looked like it might be a double play to end the game, but an error allowed a run to score to tie the game.

Carver tried to take the lead by sending another runner home on the play but he was thrown out to keep the game tied. The D-Backs were held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth so the game went to extra innings.

In the top of the tenth inning Carver was able to string together three hits and a costly D-Backs error cumulated into two Carver runs. Dodge County was able to get runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning, but a hard groundball up the middle turned into a double play to end the game with a Carver victory 7-5.

The Diamondbacks end the season with a 12-9 overall record, a region championship, and a state birth in only their second season of existence.

The D-Backs thank their fans for the wonderful crowd we had during the playoff and state run. We hope to see even more of you at the ball field next summer when the Diamondbacks try to repeat this season's success.
