The 2017 Hiawatha Valley League Conference Track and Field Meet was held in Stewartville on Saturday, May 13. The Byron girls and Stewartville boys won the meet out of the 11 teams. The Vikings both finished in 9th place but walked away with four individuals with All-Conference honors. They are Katrina Thoe, AJ Johnston, Trey Chatman, and Steven Miner.
Even though the sun beat down upon the athletes for the hottest day of the whole season and they weren't used to the warm temperature, the Vikings had a great day overall with many new personal records and many, many sunburns. As far as the competition goes though, field events are what made the Vikings get All-Conference. Thoe managed to have a discus throw out of nowhere with a distance of 120-02 where the best all season has been 111-01. She finished in 1st place in that event and 6th in the shot put with 31-02.5.
Trey Chatman finished in 2nd place in the shot with 44-05 and surprised everyone with a discus of 150-10. He went into the meet with his longest distance being 134 feet. Also in the boys shot and discus was Johnston. He placed 3rd in the shot put with 43-03 and 6th in the discus with 125-01. As you can tell, our throwers are doing outstanding this season.
The last one named All-Conference was Miner. He high jumped into 9th with 5-08, triple jumped 40-06.75, and sprinted his way to the finish in his 200m dash in a time of 24.56 taking 4th place.
Besides the winners of All-Conference, other highlights of the day included Maryx Young finishing her mile in 5:35.22 taking 5th. She continues to get closer and closer to the school record. She is now only a few seconds away. She also competed in the 800m taking 7th (2:34.7) and 7th in the 4x400m relay (4:27.72) with teammates Alexandra Louks, Paetyn Stadler, and Abby Stasko. The last highlight for the girls Viking was Kalli Jo Klocke taking 3rd in the pole vault with 9 feet.
On the boy's side of things, Masen Walsh took 8th in the long jump with a distance of 18-09.
The next "championship" type of meet will be held at Triton on Thursday, May 25th for the Sub-Section meet. We hope to see you all at the track cheering on our awesome tracksters.
