Should utility hook ups be free for Greek Revival-style house?
The Mantorville city council heard numerous comments from residents at their meeting July 15, 2013, about whether or not the city should waive the $614 water connection fee and the $2,639 sanitary sewer connection fee for the 1880's Greek Revival-style house the Mantorville Restoration Association paid to have moved onto a different piece of property.
In June, the council had approved waiving 30 per cent of the fees but several residents came to this meeting asking the city to waive the rest. The council tabled a decision until its next meeting, which fell on July 22.
The council also heard comments from residents about the planned dog park near the water tower. The council was seeking input about whether or not accepting $5,000 from Kasson towards the expenses of building the park contradicts conditions of the original city approval for the park. When the park was approved in 2011, the council agreed no tax dollars would be used to build it. Do residents feel that includes tax dollars from another town?
No conclusion was reached.
The council approved hiring a part time employee to do work of the Adam Hovden who left the city's employment to take another job.
The city council's next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Aug 12 at city hall.
