Zumbro River Flood Mitigation Study about to be completed
The Zumbro River Flood Mitigation Study is an effort to model the Zumbro River and its tributaries, providing an evaluation tool regarding potential features of flood protection for the communities along the Zumbro River that were affected in the 2010 flood or previous events. This model will assist communities in examining options for flood protection features to limit the effects of future flooding events.
Zumbro & Friends, a local non-profit, Minnesota State Mankato (MSM) Civil Engineering Department and the Department of Natural Resources are part of this joint effort. It uses data from several sources to give a comprehensive picture of the whole Zumbro River Watershed and how it reacts to rain and snowfall events bringing water to it. The MSM Engineering Department used mapping data, GIS (Geographic Information Systems) data, land use, bridge and culvert data and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data from the counties within the watershed. Weather and flood data from the 2010 flood will be used to validate the model's accuracy.
The study is scheduled to be completed in the middle of August and will be shared with community members, landowners and other stakeholders in a series of townhall meetings beginning in late August. Presentation of the model and several initial placement options of potential flood protection measures will take place during the meeting with input being solicited during an open discussion period. The goals for the flood protection measures are to increase regional flood resiliency and to meet the needs of the communities along the Zumbro River.
Funding for Zumbro River Flood Mitigation Study was provided by the State of Minnesota under the auspices of the Department of Natural Resources. Minnesota State Mankato offers engineering and engineering technology programs which began in 1981 are accredited by the American Board of Engineering and Technology. Minnesota State Mankato is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.
Zumbro & Friends was created in the aftermath of the 2010 flood with an ultimate goal to work toward a comprehensive flood control strategy for all Zumbro Watershed stakeholders. It has three strategic partners: Coming Alongside whose mission is to connect people in need with people who can help; Renewing the Countryside who mission is to strengthen rural areas by highlighting and branding the initiatives and projects of rural communities and Zumbro Watershed Partnership whose mission is cleaner water and fewer floods.
We encourage the public to attend the townhall meetings. Questions may be directed to Dr. Stephen Druschel, Civil Engineering Department, (507) 389-2115 or Stephen.Druschel@mnsu.edu; or John Homme, Chairman of Zumbro & Friends, (507)206-0177 or firstname.lastname@example.org
