Sports have always been a tradition at Byron's Good Neighbor Days and this year in no different.
Options for sports enthusiasts range from a beer frisbee tournament to Cricket. Not to mention the popular 2.5K and 5K community runs.
On Thursday, July 18 at The Bears Den, local running group Team R.E.D. will host a Beer Mile at 7 p.m.
"It's actually an official race," said Team R.E.D. member Dan Mesenburg about the nationally-recognized event.
This is the first year a Beer Mile will be held in Byron and for a cost of $20, participants will drink a beer, run a an eighth of a mile, run back, drink another beer, run an eighth of a mile, run back and continue with that pattern for four times.
"The world's record is 5 min., 4 sec. which is really good for anyone who runs a mile even without drinking a beer," Mesenburg said.
For $10, spectators can watch the race and drink a beer or two as well.
Registration can be made from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. July 18 at the Bears Den the day of the event.
"When you sign up, you will have to name a designated driver and include their phone number," Mesenburg said.
Mesenburg said the run is a great way to provide an event for adults this Good Neighbor Days to complement the concerts planned throughout the weekend.
"We just thought it would be fun to do it," he said.
Proceeds benefit the Byron Community Foundation.
Other sports events include a beer frisbee tournament at 5 p.m. Friday, July 19; a bean bag tournament at 10:30 p.m on Saturday, July 20; and a two-person cricket tournament Sunday, July 21 at 11 a.m.
All of the above mentioned events can be registered at The Bears Den a half hour before each event.
"It's a nice opportunity for this end of town," said Isaac Raaen, co-owner of The Bears Den. "Hopefully they will be a hit; I'm sure they will."
In addition, the American Legion is also hosting a bean bag tournament at noon Saturday, July 20 with sign ups at the Legion at 11 a.m.
On Sunday, July 21, Team R.E.D. will host a kiddie race at 5:30 p.m. For more information on Team R.E.D. events, visit byronteamred.blogspot.com.
