Byron readies entry for One-Act Play Competition

By Karen M. Jorgensen

Byron High School students are rehearsing for the upcoming One-Act Play competition with their version of "An Open and Shut Case."

"It's kind of a spoof of murder mysteries and whodunnits," said Director Denise Ruemping.

"We decided to take it over-the-top," she said, making it ridiculous with two-dimensional cartoon-like characters.

The play is short, running about 30 minutes, to meet the requirements of the Minnesota State High School League One-Act Play Competition.

The 10 cast members, along with the three-person crew, will perform it publicly for the first time at the HVL Varsity One-Act Play Festival on Jan. 20 at Triton High School.

They will be back at Triton on Jan. 27 for the Class 1A subsection competition. Winners in the subsection will advance to the section finals on Feb. 3. The state competition is scheduled for Feb. 8 and 9 at The O'Shaughnessy, at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.

The Byron cast is made up mostly of seniors, Ruemping said, with a couple juniors. Most of the students have been involved in the one-act competition previously and also in the other plays at the school.

Byron has participated in one-acts since 1993, Ruemping said. She added she participated in the first two years of competition as a Byron student but this is her first year directing a production.
