Last Triton info session held in West Concord

By Karen M. Jorgensen

About a dozen people showed up at the old hardware store in West Concord last Wednesday night to hear Triton School Supt. Brett Joyce give the last in-person live information presentation before next week's levy referendum.

A live streaming presentation on Facebook this Thursday night will give voters another chance to hear the presentation and ask questions.

A few questions surfaced during the West Concord presentation including why the only voting location is in Dodge Center and who determines the value of a rural homestead.

The school board is asking Triton residents for authorization to increase its general education revenue by $750 per pupil.

The board did not make the decision to have only one polling place lightly, Joyce said.

There were multiple reasons, he said, one of them being cost. Since the Triton referendum is the only question on this November's ballot, the school district will need to bear the entire cost for the election.

Board members also took into consideration the fact Minnesota allows early and absentee voting.

Many residents have already taken this option and have cast their ballots, Joyce said.

Early voting ballots can be requested by calling the District administrative offices and having one mailed or they can be picked up at the offices in Dodge Center, he said.

Joyce said he has received several calls asking about the one voting location and after he has explained it the callers have been satisfied.

He was also asked how the taxable value of a rural homestead is decided.

For school funding, how rural property is taxed differs between an operational levy and one for capital funds for construction, Joyce said.

For an operational levy, such as the one Triton is now requesting, rural property owners are taxed based on the value of their homestead, garage and one acre of property.

The value of that homestead, he said, is determined by the county assessor.

For other referendums the property owner pays taxes on his or her entire acreage.

Joyce also said that this year's referendum is for the same amount as the one that failed a year ago.
