The Dodge County community was out in force last Saturday night to help two-year-old Miles Nelson and his family as the youngster battles acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

A fundraiser for the West Concord family was held at the Dodge Center American Legion and featured a meal, silent auction, live auction and a number of items for sale including t-shirts.

Miles, the son of April and Jake Nelson, was diagnosed with AML in August.

The AML has spread throughout his body, family members said, and he is now fighting for his life.

He has had a bone marrow biopsy and a platelet transfusion and the day before the fundraiser his blood counts were good enough that he could re-enter St. Marys in Rochester for chemotherapy.

He will be in the hospital for six to nine months in a private room where the air is filtered to hopefully prevent him from catching any illnesses as the chemo destroys his immune system.

When Miles is in the hospital his parents stay in the room with him, Jake Nelson said.
