Byron sets preliminary 10.8 per cent levy increase with intent to reduce it

By Gretta Becay

After lengthy discussion, Byron city council members voted to approve a preliminary levy of about $3.4 million, a 10.8 per cent increase over last year.

City Administrator Mary Blair-Hoeft had reviewed the budget with the group in preceding weeks and brought the proposed preliminary levy of about $3.2 million to the Sept. 26 meeting. That included a 4.4 percent increase.

Expenses related to the new public works building, removing city ash trees because of potential emerald ash borer infestation, costs associated with the opening of the Byron Community Recreation Complex and planning costs for the land south of Highway 14 were some of the items the council members feared might cost more money than the budget allowed. The group agreed to work on lowering this increase before the final budget is approved in December.

Page and Quam visit

Council members also talked with two visitors to the council, Dr. Joey Page, the new superintendent of Byron schools, and State Representative Duane Quam.

About his and his family's move to Byron, Page said, "personally and professionally, it's been a really great start."

Mayor Daryl Glassmaker noted how proud Byron residents are of their schools and he complimented Page on his attendance at so many Byron events.
