Judy and Bob Schmalzbauer are pictured in this 1977 photo with their children Amy, Adam and Robin. Adam shares the story of his folks 35 year promenade for a Byron Sesquicentennial story
By Adam Schmalzbauer
Byron's 1967 prom featured its fair share of cute couples. Predictably, there were good girls paired inexplicably with "bad" boys, four-eyed gals staring dreamily into the souls of their four-eyed counterparts, and "friends" cautiously trying the magical powers of high school's most romantic evening. The single most magical couple, without a doubt, would become my parents, Bob "Doc" and Judy Schmalzbauer. Bob Schmalzbauer and Judy Sorensen did not just join those enchanted ranks of prom couples destined to marry, Doc and Judy did something infinitely more extraordinary. The couple enjoyed prom so much they returned in '68, '69, all of the '70s, '80s, '90s, as well as 2000, 2001, and 2002. For those who struggled in math, that's a 35-year promenade!
