Jordan Christopher Wilde, 19, will make his first court appearance Thursday, August 31 on charges of vehicular homicide in the death of Daniel Joseph Pyfferoen, 60, of Byron, in a head-on collision on Valleyhigh Road NW in Olmsted County.
According to court records, deputies from the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office upon arrival at the scene reported finding a 2012 Ford Focus in the middle of the road facing southeast and a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta a few feet in the south ditch, also facing southeast. Both vehicles had heavy frontend damage consistent with a head-on collision. Pyfferoen pinned in the Jetta's driver's seat and was found to be deceased.
Deputies said Wilde, driver of the Focus, told them he had not been drinking that evening but admitted to smoking marijuana prior to the collision. He denied taking any other drugs and said he was traveling home to a residence in Byron when he saw a vehicle coming.
The Minnesota State Patrol Forensic Mapping Unit determined Wilde was traveling at 62-63 miles per hour at the time of the collision and that the vehicle's cruise control system was activated. Its results showed at the time of the collision Pyfferoen's Jetta was lawfully traveling in the center of the eastbound lane and that Wilde' s Focus had crossed the center line and was also in the eastbound lane. According to the report, there were no pre-collision skid marks or post-collision gouge or skid marks from the Focus.
