This year's Good Neighbor Days is planned to be bigger and better than ever. With races, carnivals and fireworks there's something for everyone.
The five days of fun start on Wednesday July 16 with the Field of Flags sponsored by S.O.S. (Support Our Soldiers) at 7 p.m. The following day will see the annual Good Neighbor Days Medallion Hunt. This includes the Good Neighbor Traditional Hunt and the Good Neighbor Business Scavenger Hunt. That evening the Team RED Beer Mile will take place at 7 p.m. on the Bears Den grounds.
The day to get the kids involved really starts on Friday July 18. Along with the Good Neighbor Day Presentation at 6 that night at City Hall., there will be an Ice Cream Social with hot dogs and chips being served as well. City Hall will also be hosting the Byron Women of Today Kids Carnival at the same time. Bears Den jumps in on the fun again at 6:30 that evening with the Beersbee Tournament. Once the sun goes down, City Hall will invite people back again to watch "The Lego Movie" put on the big screen.
Once the work week is over, the fun keeps going. Saturday's GND activities start bright and early at 8 a.m. with the Flea Market at Christ Lutheran Church and stays open until 4 p.m.
The Farmers Market starts at the same time just down the street at 3D's Sports Bar. The 5K or 2.5K Community Run will start at 8 a.m. filled with prizes and awards. That run will take place at Byron Middle School. Bears Den's Co-Ed Sand Volleyball Tournament starts at 8 a.m. A few hours later, the Bears Den Bean Bag Tournament will start at noon.
The final day of GND, Sunday, starts out with the Team Cricket Tournament at Bears Den at 11 a.m. Team RED will then host the Free Kids Mile Run at 2:30 that afternoon at the Byron Middle School. The two most historic Byron Good Neighbor Days events will close up the week of fun. At 3 p.m. the Good Neighbor Days Parade will start at the Byron Middle School and work its way down to the Elementary School. At dusk the fireworks will be lit and signify the end of Byron's most famous week from the Byron Elementary School.
Byron rarely gets time throughout the year to just relax and spend time together, but this week proves different. Make sure to get out and enjoy the events as they roll through the small town, because just like all your favorite holidays, Byron Good Neighbor Days only comes once a year.
