Dawn Mendahl recently opened her dog grooming business on her property in rural Brownsdale. Mendahl had been at D.A.W.G Boarding in Waltham for several years, before that she had her own shop in Kasson. "The drive began to be too much," she explained. "So I moved my business from Kasson to Waltham and now I am here."
Dawn started grooming dogs out of her own shop on her property in January but says a lot of her clients still don't know that she has moved. "It's been kind of a slow winter," she explained. "But business is starting to pick up."
Her husband originally started working on her shop and was going to turn it into his own wood working shop, but when Dawn decided she needed a new place to groom dogs he began to turn it into a shop for her. "He built everything in here," she said. "The table and the steel tub, I use to give dogs their baths, was all built by him."
Mendahl grooms both small and large breed dogs; she does haircuts, toenails, teeth brushing and baths. She has over 20 years experience in dog grooming and will work with more aggressive dogs if needed. "Some dogs just really don't like to be groomed," she said. "I'll groom them if they aren't too bad, a lot of the times I will have the owners stay and hold them while I trim their nails."
She said it takes about an hour and half to groom a dog, but she does allow clients to drop off their dogs in the morning and then come and get them in the evening when they are done with work. She also keeps her hours flexible. "I know sometimes evenings just work better for people so I try to make that work," she said. "I can normally get a dog in the same day if necessary."
