4/24/2014 4:22:00 PM About being a Royal... June Bloom arts event to coincide with DC pageant
By Melanie Dobson
If you're interested in becoming part of the 2014-2015 Dodge Center Royalty Court, there will be an informational meeting on Monday, April 28 at 6:30 at the Dodge Center Library.
Contestants must be in kindergarten or a senior in high school for the 2014-2015 school year. All contestants must have a Dodge Center address to be eligible. If you can't make the meeting, call Cheryl at 507-374-2794 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org. The Miss Dodge Center pageant happens on Father's Day weekend, Saturday, June 14.
The Dodge Center Chamber provides scholarships for pageant royalty winners and other support. Chamber members have talked about having an event to compliment the pageant.
An idea on how to do that was sparked from the chamber's annual meeting in February. The guest speaker Sue Flemke, a humorist and comedian, made everyone laugh but also offered a challenge as well. On a serious note, she complimented the chamber's mission statement and its involvements, but she noted, "There is one thing you are missing... and that is the arts."
That challenge really resonated with some of the members and June Bloom was born.
June Bloom will begin at 10 a.m. Area artists, painters, sculptors, potters, crafters, authors, photographers, etc. are being invited to set up in North Park. Musicians of differing genres will provide a musical backdrop. The first annual Minnesota Sings state-wide vocal competition will be introduced at June Bloom. Artisans will supply one of their creations for a silent auction in lieu of payment for their booth display. There may be poetry readings in between musical sets.
The Miss Dodge Center Pageant is scheduled for about 4:30. Following the pageant a reception will follow with a chicken fry hosted by the Dodge Center Lions Club. There may be a movie at dusk if the chamber can find a sponsor.
More details on June Bloom will unfold in future issues of the Star Herald. If you are interested in participating, helping or for more information call 374-6531.
