Business of the Year to be named

By David Richards

It's growing.

The Byron Area Chamber of Commerce is now home to 80 members from Byron, Blooming Prairie, Pine Island, Dodge Center and Rochester.

"I think it shows the support from the area," said Dena Moitzheim, the 2012 chamber secretary. "Being on the chamber helps get your name out there. There's a lot of opportunity to get your business known."

The chamber will name the 2012 Business of the Year and Volunteer of the Year at its annual celebration Jan. 17 at Somerby that begins at 5:30 p.m. The event is open to chamber members only, and tickets must have been reserved in advance.

In addition to the awards and recognition portion of the evening, the keynote speaker will be Jeff Elstad, superintendent of Byron Public Schools.

Elstad will be speaking on the projected growth of the district, as well as the future of education.

This year's chamber president is Rachael Bongarden of Ever Grey Photography. Vice president is Barb Schriever of First Alliance Credit Union; Staci Smoot of Edward Jones is secretary; Marie Peterson of the City of Byron is the membership director; Bobbi Olson of CliftonLarsonAllen is treasurer; Mark Chilson, Farm Bureau, is director at large; while Jerry Fischer of Leashes & Leads is past president.

The chamber meets on the third Thursday of the month at noon at Somerby.
