Oct 24 would have been Loring Guenther's 44th birthday. His family and friends gathered to remember Guenther at a tree-planting ceremony at the courthouse in Mantorville where Guenther had served in the Sheriff's department for many years. At the time of his death of a heart attack Sept 10, Guenther was captain and his leadership qualities were recalled by Investigator Scott Rose who spoke at the ceremony along with Chief Deputy Mike Leonhardt.
Rose said Guenther was always thought of as a leader, not a boss.
"Anyone would have followed him voluntarily, regardless of his rank."
The tree selected for the site is a north woods Red Maple, a hardy specimen that will provide shade, brilliant fall color, and some measure of comfort to those who will always remember Guenther, said Rose.
