Ruby and Jim Jensen, who live in Sargeant, have been chosen as Stewartville's United Educators 2013 Friends of Education.

Ruby and Jim began volunteering in Roberta Lentz's classroom approximately 11 years ago when their granddaughter, Ballie Jensen, was in her first grade class.

Their granddaughter moved to California, but they enjoyed volunteering so much that they continued to go on a weekly basis. Mrs. Lentz estimates that they have volunteered approximately 700 hours between the two of them.

Jim and Ruby live in Sargeant and drive weekly to volunteer at Bonner Elementary School. They love to read books with the kids, play cooperative games, help with Learning Stations, and just listen to the stories the children share with them.

Each winter for about six weeks, Jim and Ruby travel to visit their grandchildren. During their travels, they send postcards every week so the children in Stewartville can chart their travels into a geography lesson of the USA.

Jim and Ruby were also actively involved for about 10 years with the Santa Shoppe. Jim helped the kids shop and Ruby helped stamp bags and wrap presents.

"I love to help kids read!" Ruby said. "They are so much fun."

Jim said he didn't like school. He enjoys being in school more today than when he was a student. He loves to "have fun with the kiddos, wind them up and then turn them back to Mrs. Lentz." He always reminds them to be on their best behavior during the holidays. He claims to be Santa's brother and he truly looks like Santa.

The Jensens were recognized at a program at Bonner Elementary School on May 14.
